BBFL Gives Over $84K in Support of Weekend Food Programs (Press Release)
Wednesday July 25, 2018 – Leesburg, Va. – The Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun, Inc. (BBFL) donated $84,395 to 14 local groups who support over 1,600 students on a weekly basis by running weekend food programs for students in Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS). The grant distribution amount ranged from $500 - $51,395 depending on the number of students that the individual program supports each week.
“BBFL is performing on its mission to fund, facilitate, and educate existing and potential weekend food programs in Loudoun County,” said Daniel L. Hampton, President & Founder. “We provide financial donations and a forum for discussion to help ensure that no student goes hungry over the weekend.”
During the current school year, there are 80 schools and about 3,000 students receiving supplemental food through these programs. The individual programs participants, which are open to all students in need, confidentially receive bags of food to help sustain them through the weekend. In addition to the weekly bag, many programs also send supplemental food prior to winter and spring breaks.
“We want to thank all of the groups for their continued support of the students in Loudoun County that rely on their program every weekend. They are a vital link in our community and BBFL is happy to recognize their efforts,” said Hampton. “We are proud of our partnership with the amazing groups and their volunteers who work to provide meals to students in need while working towards our mutual goal of eliminating the current food insecurity issue that thousands of students face daily. We also want to thank the numerous supporters in the community that provide financial contributions, attend our annual FriendsGiving Fundraiser, and volunteer their time. Due to the generosity of the community and their support of BBFL, we were able to more than double the amount of money provided through approved grants this year.”
The groups that received donations were the Loudoun Education Foundation (LEF)/Backpack Coalition Program, St. David’s Episcopal Church, Our Savior’s Way Lutheran Church, St. Theresa Church, Leesburg United Methodist Church, Galilee United Methodist Church, Dulles South Food Pantry, St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Ashburn Presbyterian Church, Mill Run Elementary School, Mountain View Elementary School, Church of the Holy Spirit, Destiny Church, and Harmony Middle School.
