Who We Are

We began in 2014 with 2 members, a lot of community support, and a lofty goal to ensure no child in Loudoun County goes hungry over the weekend or during extended school breaks. Since then,BBFL has added additional Board members to the team, each bringing unique experience, perspective and talent to our cause. While we may hail from different backgrounds, regions and professions, we all maintain a tireless commitment to helping the food insecure children in our community and creating a world in which our organization can cease to exist!

DANIEL L. HAMPTON

A native of New Jersey, Dan began volunteering when he was a teenager, inspired by his parents and influential people around him. In college he volunteered over 100 hours/year, and chaired several programs including Safe Rides, which provided free sober rides to students at night to avoid drinking and driving. Since moving to Leesburg in 2005, Dan has continued his volunteer efforts as a youth soccer coach. In 2008, he joined the Rotary Club of Leesburg and has served in various positions on the Board including as President. Through Rotary, Dan became aware of the challenges many local students face with food insecurity, so he partnered with fellow Rotarians and other community advocates to create the concept for BBFL in 2013. His passion for solving the issue of food insecurity for children escalated even further with the birth of Dan’s children. Dan and his wife Karen, who is a teach for LCPS, have two sons and live in Leesburg.

Fred Williams

Fred graduated from UVA and spent 37 years in a career in HR/Benefits/Wellness leadership positions with Quest Diagnostics, from which he retired in 2012. He has found great irony in moving from his work in Wellness, where he often worked to help adults across the country to eat less and better - to helping the youngest students in Leesburg who may not have enough to eat.  Fred has lived in downtown Leesburg with his wife Kate since 1977, raised two children, and is now blessed with 5 grandchildren. Fred is an active member in the Rotary Club of Leesburg.

Susan L. Murphy

Susan grew up in Oakton, VA and graduated from the University of Virginia. She is currently a project manager at Freddie Mac and was a CPA at PricewaterhouseCoopers prior to that. Susan’s commitment to giving back to her community began with co-founding the Backpack Buddy program at Frances Hazel Reid ES after seeing a need for weekend meals for many of her children’s classmates. The program partnered with St. James Episcopal Church the same year and grew from 50 students to almost 125 students over four years. Susan also serves on the Board of Directors for the Lakes at Red Rock swim team and is an active volunteer for the PTA and her children’s sports teams. She and her husband, Eric, have lived in Leesburg for the past 14 years and have children at Balls Bluff ES and Harper Park MS.

Eva M. Smith

Eva grew up in Somerville, Massachusetts, an urban city bordering Boston. She graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Engineering and spent the next eight years working as a construction project engineer. In 2011, Eva and her husband, Michael moved to Leesburg, Virginia and had two children. She began volunteering at Evergreen Mill ES where her daughter attended, and became highly involved with the school’s Backpack Buddies Program, assisting with every aspect from food procurement to packing and distribution of bags, as well as to helping coordinate school food drives and fundraisers. She joined the Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun, Inc. in early 2016 as a way to expand efforts and help a greater number of children.
